Rounding Numbers

Find your place
Look next door
Five or greater,
Add one more!

The digits in front
Stay the same
The digits behind,
Zero's the name.

The rhyme above will help students to round numbers.  For example, to round 395 to the nearest hundred, students should find the hundreds place value, look next door to the right, five or greater, add one more.

The digits in front of the hundreds place value stay the same while the digits to the right become zeros.

Look at the example below.

3 9 5
Find your place Look next door

3 + 1

Five or greater,
Add one more!

4 0 0
The digits in front
Stay the same
The digits behind,
Zero's the name.

So 395 rounded to the hundreds place value will equal 400.
